This is our final report on Susan's and my trip to Russia and the WRTC.I hope some of you have enjoyed our comments and will see fit to visit Russia and enjoy it as we did.73, Richard - K5NA & Susan - K5DUFriday -16 July 2010 - In Saint Petersburg Friday was our last whole day in Saint Petersburg. We planned to relax and to visit with our new friend Zoya RA1AGN who we met at Atlas Park. We ate bread and butter and some cheese we bought without understanding the label. The rye bread and butter were fine but the cheese was odd. One wedge was chocolaty; another was something else we couldn’t name. About 11:00 we gave up waiting for Zoya’s call and went out. Gary (W5ZL) and Leslie had left earlier in the morning to take the train to Helsinki so this was our first day...
It is my turn (K5NA) to write something. Though I will be primarily talking about Wednesday and Thursday, I actually want to extend my comments back to the WRTC and the closing ceremony on Monday evening.
What a wonderful time we had at the WRTC event here in Russia. The Russian WRTC committeemen did a great job of organizing, timing, managing, and making this a great event. The closing ceremony was spectacular with dancing, music, and a feast that was more bountiful than any feast I had ever attended before.
The host nation, Russia, had the championship team this year and RW1AC and RA1AIP were the winners. I was pleased to be a part of their celebration.
And I can say in my opinion that the station arrangements and setups were the fairest that they could possibly be.

Monday and Tuesday – Domodedovo to Saint Petersburg
Susan’s turn again.
Monday after the contest was our day to rest, to celebrate, and to pack for the next phase of the trip.
We slept late at the Atlas Park Hotel and strolled in to the breakfast buffet. Horrors. One of the coffee machines was empty. Once it was refilled I was alive and awake. Every breakfast at Atlas Park Hotel had almost the same breakfast items available: rolls, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers, plain spaghetti, apple blintzes, fried and boiled eggs, and assorted sausages. We also had porridge and cereal and yogurt, milk and juice. The wait service was swift – empty a dish and it was gone.

Today (Wednesday) it is my turn to write about Susan’s and my day in Moscow.
It was another bright, sunny, and perfect day. After the four of us ate breakfast, Susan (K5DU), Me, Gary (W5ZL), and Leslie caught the subway to downtown Moscow.
We arrived at Red Square after 10AM and Susan and I got in line to see Lenin’s body lying in state. It was a complicated process and we started by waiting in a long line behind a barrier about one-half mile away from the mausoleum. Every 15 minutes about 100 people were allowed through to the next checkpoint.
At the next checkpoint you checked your backpacks, cameras and cell-phones with built in cameras. They gave you a numbered ticket to reclaim your stuff later. No cameras of any kind are allowed ...

Tuesday dawned bright and sunny and we were ready to explore more of Moscow. The four of us - Gary W5ZL, Leslie, Richard K5NA, and I Susan K5DU - felt like natives already when we met for breakfast. We went to the McDonald's across the street for coffee and various McMuffins. Then we went back to the hotel for out maps and Metro cards, and threaded our way through the busloads of Italians in the hotel lobby. Sokolniki Metro station is clean and organized. Riders getting on do not have to bully a path through those getting on. We rode seven stops to the station Biblioteka imena Lenina - the Library named for Lenin - and climbed up to the ground.
